Learn home espresso

Ten guides that assume you have never done this before, and never make you feel bad about that.

By Scooter M. · Published

Someone making coffee at home

Home espresso has an unusually high jargon-to-substance ratio. Pre-infusion, microfoam, channeling, single dosing, WDT, puck screens, ratios — most of it describes something simple, and almost all of it is explained by people who forgot what it was like not to know.

These guides start from zero. Every term gets defined in the sentence it appears in. Nothing here assumes you own anything in particular, and nothing here suggests a floor you have to spend to before you are allowed to make coffee.

Start here, in this order

  1. **What espresso actually is** — the definition, and how it differs from every other way of making coffee.
  2. **Your first shot** — a step-by-step you can follow with a machine you unboxed an hour ago.
  3. **Espresso ratios** — what 1:2 means and why every recipe is written that way.
  4. **Dialing in** — the method for turning an acceptable shot into a good one.

Technique, once the basics work

  • **Tamping** — how hard, how level, and why level matters more.
  • **Puck prep** — the two minutes before the shot that decide most of it.
  • **Pre-infusion** — what it is, and whether you need a machine that does it.

Context and vocabulary

The two sentences that carry most of it

And the second: if changing your grind does not change how fast the shot runs, stop adjusting technique. That is a grinder limit, and it is the one thing on this site that practice does not fix. See grinders.

What these guides deliberately do not do

  • **Tell you there is a minimum you must spend.** The honest floor is lower than this category usually claims, and we show the arithmetic on what it costs.
  • **Claim we tested anything.** We have not handled this equipment. What we publish instead is manufacturer documentation, cited, and arithmetic you can redo — see how we pick.
  • **Use a term without defining it.** If we do, that is a mistake and we would like to hear about it.

Questions people actually ask

Where should a complete beginner start?

With what espresso is, then your first shot. Those two cover the definition and the sequence, which is everything you need to make a drink on day one.

How long does it take to learn home espresso?

Usually a few days to a drinkable shot and a couple of weeks to a consistent one, assuming the grinder can reach espresso fineness. If it cannot, no amount of practice helps — see how long it takes.

Do I need to understand all the jargon?

No. You need a ratio, a time and a grind direction. The rest of the vocabulary is useful for reading other people's advice, which is what the glossary is for.

What is the most common beginner mistake?

Spending the whole budget on the machine and pairing it with a grinder that cannot reach espresso fineness. It produces a fast, sour shot that no technique corrects.
