These words are used loosely by everyone including manufacturers, which is why the category is confusing. Here is what each one means in practice, from most work to least.
Manual lever
You supply the pressure with a lever or a piston. There is no pump. You control the pressure curve directly, which is more control than any pump machine at any price gives you, and you get it for very little money — see the Flair on our under $200 page. The trade is that it makes one shot at a time and usually needs a separate kettle.
Semi-automatic
A pump supplies the pressure; you decide when to stop. You grind, dose, tamp, lock in and press a button, then press it again — or the machine stops at a preset volume. This is the category almost every beginner machine sits in, including everything Breville sells to first-time buyers.
Automatic
The machine stops the shot for you at a set volume. In practice most "semi-automatic" beginner machines have volumetric buttons and are therefore automatic by this definition, which is exactly why the terms are unhelpful. Breville states one-touch 1 and 2 shot volumetric control on the Bambino Plus, and nobody calls it an automatic machine.
Super-automatic / bean-to-cup
The machine grinds, doses, tamps, brews and — usually — makes the milk drink. There is no portafilter. You never touch coffee. Philips's 3200 LatteGo is this category: 12 grind settings, 3 strength settings, water held between 90 and 98°C, and a milk system that rinses under the tap.

The 54 mm portafilter and 18 g dose matter more than they sound: they put the machine on the same dose a cafe uses, so any recipe you read applies to it directly and every 54 mm accessory fits.
The three-second heat-up is the difference between espresso being a weekday habit and a weekend project. A machine that takes fifteen minutes to be ready is a machine you use on Sundays.
The automatic steam wand is the single biggest reason this suits a first setup. Milk texturing is the skill that takes longest to learn; handing it to the machine removes the part most likely to make you give up.

- Ready in seconds, which is what makes it a habit rather than a project
- Automatic milk means a drinkable cappuccino before you can texture by hand

- Nothing here helps if your grinder cannot go fine enough
Skip it if you want one box that does everything with no learning curve — a bean-to-cup machine is the honest answer for that, and it is a different product.

The 20,000-cup burr rating is a durability claim worth reading literally: at three drinks a day that is roughly eighteen years, so the burrs are not the thing that will fail first.
The milk system is the real differentiator. Automatic machines that pump milk through tubes need a cleaning cycle every day; a two-part carafe that rinses under the tap is the version people actually keep up with.
Twelve grind settings is plenty for a machine that also controls dose and yield itself, and would be tight on a machine where you control them.

The 58 mm portafilter is the argument. It is the size commercial machines use, so every basket, tamper, distribution tool and bottomless portafilter on the market fits.
It asks more of you than a Breville does — there is no automatic milk, no PID from the factory, and the learning curve is real.

The question underneath the categories
Every one of these makes coffee under pressure. What separates them is how many decisions you are making, and the honest question is how many you want to make at 7am on a weekday. There is no virtue in choosing the one with more steps — a bean-to-cup machine you use daily beats a lever press in a cupboard.
Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between semi-automatic and automatic espresso machines?+−
A semi-automatic gives you a pump and lets you stop the shot; an automatic stops it for you at a set volume. In practice most beginner machines do both, which is why the labels are close to useless when shopping.
Is a super-automatic machine worth it?+−
If you want coffee rather than the process, yes, and you should not be talked out of it. If you want to change how the shot tastes, no — the variables you would adjust are not exposed.
Do I need a lever machine to control pressure?+−
To control it directly, yes. Pump machines with pressure profiling exist and start well above a first-setup budget. A lever press is the cheap route to that control and the slow route to a second drink.
Which type is most reliable?+−
Fewer moving parts generally means fewer failures, so a lever press has the least to go wrong and a bean-to-cup the most. Reliability also depends heavily on descaling, which is the maintenance people skip.
